Chapter Six

The Trip to Easterdale

All the others were waiting on Geewhizz and Neenee’s bridge, by the time Terry and Nicky arrived and they wasted no time at all in getting on their way to Easterdale.

The seven friends plan (seven as Dork the Snorkeldork was with them), was to follow the river Wester until they reached the flat country, then cross over into Easterdale and follow the river Easter back into the Dale. They decided to take this route, rather the climbing over the high hills, as Friendly Trolls are not that good at climbing.

The weather was fine on this July day as they set off on their mission, but strangely, even though it was all very serious, they were all smiling and happy and even Dork was purring.  Norman and NeeNee led the way followed by Terry, Nicky and Weed, finally bringing up the rear were Geewhizz and Dork.

The river Wester was low and they made good time walking along dry flat parts of the rive bed and were soon in Lower Westerdale.  Here Terry checked his magical pocket watch and looked at the lucky pointer but it was still on GO.   After another mile or so Terry judge that it was about where they needed to be, to head over into Easterdale.  Norman, who was taller than the others, checked over the riverbank and spotted a footpath sign.   On closed inspection of the sign, they found the words, Footpath To, written on the sign and then nothing, the destination word had rotted away.

Terry checked his magical pocket watch again and to his joy the lucky pointer was now green and pointing along the footpath.   The footpath led away from the river Wester across a wide grassy field and over a low hill towards Easterdale.   There were sheep and lambs scattered about the field, the lambs were quite big by this time of the year.  As the seven walked passed, the sheep would stop what they were doing (mostly eating grass) and look up for a short while before going back to what they were doing before (mostly eating grass).   The presence of the group did not seem to worry the sheep at all, it was the trolls that were starting to get nervous, as they moved away from the safety of the river bank.

Over the hill, the path wound down a gentle slope, across another two big fields into Easterdale and then through a small wood to the river Easter.  All the time, Terry kept checking his magical pocket watch to be sure they where on the right path.   At the river, the lucky hand on the magical pocket watch, turned to point upstream.  By now Weed was hungry, so they agreed to walk up the river until they came to the first bridge, where they would stop for lunch.

It wasn’t long before the reached a bridge over the river Easter, Terry kept on checking his magical pocket watch.  At the bridge the pointer was red and pointing to OPEN.  So they sat on the bank under the bridge a opened their bags and had their lunch.  As they were eating, another girl troll appeared from the bank, she said "hello can I help you".  It was Amber, another Friendly Troll and it was her bridge they were all sat under.  "Hello Amber" they all replied, all except Nicky, as she didn’t know her name was Amber.

Amber's Bridge

After the introductions were over, they sheared their sandwiches with Amber and explained what they were doing in Easterdale.  Amber said that two of the Waterfall Trolls had been acting very strangely lately and asking lots of questions about Westerdale.  Amber also said that what she thought looked like the same two Waterfall Trolls, had even been seen heading toward Westerdale the previous day.

Amber gave directions to where she was sure the two Waterfall Trolls most likely to be involved in the robbery lived, the High Waterfall.  Terry had a quick look at his magical pocket watch the lucky hand was green and pointing up the river the way Amber had said.  As soon as they finished drinking the tea, the seven said their goodbys to Amber and set off up river, towards the High Waterfall.
